With a grounded circuit, only one wire becomes hot and the other wire is grounded. Touching the hot wire still exposes a person to the full circuit voltage. In a grounded circuit, we often refer to the electricity traveling from the source to the load on the hot wire and returning to the source on the grounded wire.

How does a ground circuit work?

Grounding works by leveraging the negative electrical properties of the ground. The ground on which you walk has a negative electrical charge. Therefore, it's able to neutralize positively charged electricity. Grounding allows excess electricity to discharge through the ground.

What causes a ground circuit?

A ground fault occurs when electricity takes an unplanned path to ground. The current drastically increases and causes the breaker to trip. A ground fault can be caused by damaged appliances, incorrect wiring, or worn wire insulation.

What is an example of a grounded circuit?

An example of a grounded circuit might be a taillight. If the wire leading to the light were broken and touching the frame, the electricity would be grounded back to the battery. Generally, grounded circuits will cause excessive current to be sent though the fuse, causing the fuse to blow.
